Denis Sl., Tom Watson’s 70s action has a greater degree of clubhead lag
(Look closely at his downswing transition). His millennium swing is quite
steep (Don’t need to look closely, it’s very steep.)
Steepness is not an age issue! It’s a technique “thing”.
Watson may be wise to adopt a significant amount of clubhead lag, greater
amount than the 70s iteration. This change in technique should help him to
maintain his clubhead speed, shaft pressure torque and ball compression as
he ages. Back to the future may be a wise play for Tom Watson. ?
Golf swing techniques are like fashion… they come in and out of vogue
every 5 to 10 years. This swing will be taught long after the stack and
tilt. Why? Mainly because golf physics are better understood now and we
have the advantage now seeing why the best swings worked so well in the
past. His swing has always had many components which worked well and
allowed him to compete once he got past his initial few difficult years as
a pro. If he’d swung it like this early on, he’d have won even more often
in his youth. One of the toughest competitors in golf.?
Your reply makes little sense. Compare the angle of his right forearm
relative to his spine angle. Everyone is a fricking genius on youtube.
Smarten up.
this swing has changed a tonne. look at the angle of his right forearm at
the top in 2009 relation to vertical. now compare it to 1977. that’s a huge
change in the world of pro golf.
the heavy bell bottom pants lowered his center of gravity which resulted in
the classic reverse C of that era. Once bell bottoms went out of style the
reverse C disappeared from golf 😉
YOU CAN KEEP YOUR SPIN ANGLE WITHHHH REVERSE C ADDED IN TOO. ITS THE SPINE
ANGLE FROM A REAR VIEW THAT’S IMPORTANT, AND KEEPING HEAD NICELY OVER THE
FEET. YOU CAN STILL REPLACE THE LEFT SHOULDER POSITION WITH THE RIGHT
SHOULDER DOIN REVERSE C… IN FACT IT HELPS ONE TO ACTUALLY KEEP THE
SHOULDER’S ‘FLYWHEEL’ GOING’ IN A STRAIGHT LINE MORE, RATHER THAN THROWING
THE RIGHT SHOULDER OVER THE TOP IN COMES DOWN AND THROUGH… JUST MAKE SURE
TO FOCUS ON GETTING THOSE HANDS ON THE LEFT SHOULDER +RYTHM
Bear in mind, we are looking from slightly behind Watson in the 1977 video,
which may make any differences in angles more pronounced than they actually
are.
Can’t really upload Augusta National clips anymore, cause they get banned
and you get strikes vs your account. However in 1991 during that years
Masters seemed to be the best I ever saw Watson hit the ball. He worked
with Lead for a bit and had so much zip through the ball. From watching old
impossible to find recordings of the 82 US Open & British, the 91 Swing
during that weeks Masters was Watson at his best….If this guy had a belly
putter, he would have won 20 Majors.
It’s a terrific upload – thanks! Like Watson, I’m from the KC area and have
seen him play so many times. His eight major’s is an accomplishment, but,
it’s hard to believe he didn’t win more.
THING IS… IN ‘TOM WATSON’S SECRET’ MOVE, HE TALKS ABOUT SHOULDER
SYNC/SPINE ANGLE… IN THE 1977 VIDEO HE IS STILLLLL KEEPING HIS SPINE
ANGLE BRILLIANTLY. HE MAY HAVE FIGURED IT OUT IN 1992, BUT SCIENCE SAYS HE
DIDN’T BECOME A PRO GOLFER WITHOUT ALREADY DOING IT LOADS. IF YOU DO LOTS
OF YOGA AND KEEP YOUR SPINE SUPPLE, REVERSE C IS ACTUALLY HELPFUL LIKE
JONNY MILLER SAYS, IT HELPS YOU HIT IT EVEN STRAIGHTER. IF TOM HADN’T EATEN
SO MANY BURGERS HE’D STILL BE DOING IT. GOOD BOTH YEARS.
“Clearly more intelligent” and it took you two whole days to come up with
that? I’ve been waiting and waiting for a clever comeback but, that ain’t
it!! lol
And, also, to me it appears Watson’s 1977 swing was much more ‘athletic’
and a more powerful motion with, as you mentioned, a lot more stress on the
body. Well said.

Sorry I dont like this because you are comparing an older man versus a
younger man….this really does not work as a good comparison for that
reason?
two different clubs, then two different lies. Not the best comparison to
show, but still a great swing for a man at that age,,,,,open legend….?
this guy has the prettiest swing ever

Clever comeback. Genius or not, I’m clearly more intelligent than you.
sadface.
it seems a lot of players back in the 70’s were crossed at the top of the
swing

@4736dmr But i waggle
so do i; but not as much as sergio garcia used to (about 20 x) until he
changed
i’ve always admired his swing, which is timeless; he’s one of the few
golfers left that waggles club, which seems to be a lost art these days

@EagleEyeGolfer UGHHH…….. this video actually shows how over the years,
its been proven, that its all about weight transfer….

Great!
So, it seems you’re now the “fricking genius on youtube”? As you instructed
.. smarten up, wise guy.

2009 swing is better than his 1977 swing.
awesome, thanks!
